Danish police stated on Monday that the suspect in the shooting that took place at a shopping mall in Copenhagen was known to psychiatric doctors. The suspect is suspected of killing three people and wounded several others during the attack.
Sunday's shooting took place within Field's, a shopping complex in the Danish capital city of Copenhagen, at a number of different locations. Social media footage depicted mall patrons fleeing and heavily armed law enforcement police on the site.
At a press conference held on Monday morning, Copenhagen's Head of Police Soren Thomassen announced that three people had been killed in the gunfire: a male and a female Danish national aged 17; and a Russian national aged 47.
According to Thomassen, two further Danes and two Swedish nationals had received gunshot wounds and were currently being treated in a hospital for serious but stable conditions. Several other people had incurred minor injuries while exiting the mall.
According to Rigshospitalet hospital, which is treating the majority of the casualties from the attack, as of Monday, only one of the four people who were injured was still in a critical condition.
A man in his twenties from Denmark was taken into custody in connection with the shooting, and he is the lone suspect at this time. According to Thomassen, there is no evidence to suggest that the suspect was operating with others; however, an investigation is still ongoing.
Earlier, the police had stated that they had captured the suspect 13 minutes after getting the first emergency contact, and that at the time of his arrest, he was "carrying a firearm and ammunition."
Thomassen stated that there was no evidence that the attack was a "act of terror" nor that it was motivated by gender, and the police believe that the victims were chosen at random. He made these statements during a news conference on Monday. According to him, the suspect was "familiar to professionals working in the field of psychiatry."
Thomassen noted that the suspect will be charged with manslaughter.
